« The Francophones of Surrey » – British Columbia Historical Federation conference, June 4 2021
The SHFCB is a member society of the BCHF. Its Executive Director Maurice Guibord is also a BCHF Board member.
While the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 BCHF conference, it was decided to host the 2021 conference completely on line, hosted by the Surrey Historical Society. Maurice Guibord presented on « The Francophones of Surrey », which entailed primary research in the archives of both Surrey and White Rock (which was earlier part of Surrey).
The presentation deals with the following Francophones: Elias John Newton and his wife Matilda in Newton, the Charbonneau family of Cloverdale; Hormidas and Hermine Lapierre, Charles and Victorine Letourneur of Letourneur Park, Paul Accarias from Algeria, Arthur and Irene Margaret Bourassa, Abel Émile and Jean Dupraz of White Rock, Marie-Louis Lavoie of the Lavoie Dance School, Irène Maccaud of Maccaud Park, RCMP Constable Paul Émile Pierlet of the Pierlet Overpass, the Association francophone de Surrey, the Canadian Haitian Cultural Association of BC, the Mauritian Canadian Cultural Association of BC, and the area named Bon Accord.
